PurelyMin Magnesium Complex: The Serving on the Label, and the One the Brand Also Suggests

Three capsules of North American Herb & Spice PurelyMin Magnesium Complex hold 279 mg of elemental magnesium, under the 350 mg a day that adults are told not to pass from supplements and medications. The same shop page says older adults can take four or five capsules, which works out to 372 or 465 mg, over that line. Write "3 capsules, 279 mg" on the medicine list, ask the pharmacist before any fourth capsule, and ask before the first one if a parent has kidney disease or takes a bone drug, certain antibiotics, a diuretic, or a long-term acid reflux pill.

Three capsules are under the cap. Four are over it.

The Office of Dietary Supplements puts the daily recommended amounts at 400 to 420 mg for men and 310 to 320 mg for women, counting food, drinks, and supplements together. The ceiling is a separate number. It counts only magnesium from supplements and medications, it is 350 mg for adults, and the consumer fact sheet says that magnesium in dietary supplements and medications should not be consumed in amounts above the upper limit, unless recommended by a health care provider. Magnesium from food is not part of that 350.

The maker's shop page, read on 2 October 2026, lists three capsules as one serving and 279 mg of elemental magnesium, about 93 mg a capsule. Its "How to Take" line is three capsules an hour before sleep, or as needed during the day. Further down, the product FAQ says it is okay to go up to four or five capsules split through the day, especially for adults who are older or have special needs and mineral deficiency. At 93 mg a capsule, four is 372 mg and five is 465 mg.

Two other routines on that page drift the same way. The sleep answer starts at one capsule an hour before bed and moves up to three. Another answer describes customers who take one or two capsules in the morning and one or two in the evening, which can add up to four. So the page offers anything from one capsule to five. The supplement-facts serving, three capsules and 279 mg, is the one that stays under the ceiling, and it is the one to write down. A fourth capsule waits for a clinician who has named that number, which is the exception the fact sheet itself allows.

Before the first capsule: kidneys, bone drugs, antibiotics

In healthy people the kidneys clear extra magnesium in the urine, according to the consumer fact sheet. The Office of Dietary Supplements' professional fact sheet, updated 6 January 2026, adds that with age the gut absorbs less magnesium and the kidneys excrete more of it, and that older adults are more likely to take medicines that change magnesium status. A parent with diagnosed kidney disease is outside the healthy-kidney sentence altogether. That decision belongs to the clinician who has the lab results, and the food and medicine rules for that diagnosis are in kidney disease in older adults.

The bone-drug question has a number. Magnesium and bisphosphonates, the osteoporosis tablets such as alendronate (Fosamax), get in each other's way in the gut, and the professional sheet says Taking magnesium-rich supplements or medications at least 2 hours before or after oral bisphosphonates can minimize this interaction. How those tablets are taken in the morning is in osteoporosis in older adults.

Antibiotics need a longer gap. For tetracyclines such as doxycycline and quinolones such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, the same professional sheet puts the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after a magnesium supplement. Diuretics pull both ways: loop and thiazide types such as furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide raise magnesium loss in urine, while potassium-sparing ones such as spironolactone reduce it. Prescription proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux, taken for a long time (typically more than a year), can lower blood magnesium.

These are four questions for one pharmacy visit, with the bottle in hand, and the answers go on the master list with the dose, the time of day, and who approved it. That list is the first step in how to organize an elderly parent's medications. A parent already taking calcium has the same timing question with a different bottle, covered in calcium citrate vs calcium carbonate.

What the three capsules hold

The ingredient line is Magtein magnesium L-threonate, magnesium glycinate, and magnesium taurate, with 414 mg of L-theanine and cellulose. The shop page describes L-theanine as an amino acid found in green tea. On a medicine list it is a second ingredient, and it gets its own line.

The page gives each form a job: glycinate for calm, taurate for the heart, threonate for the brain. Those are the maker's descriptions. The consumer fact sheet names a different set as the forms more easily absorbed, magnesium aspartate, magnesium citrate, magnesium lactate, and magnesium chloride, and it does not rank threonate, glycinate, or taurate either way. Choosing this bottle means choosing the maker's mix of magnesium glycinate, threonate, and taurate, and the dose question above is the same whichever form is inside.

Is a parent short on magnesium in the first place?

Food sources on the consumer fact sheet include legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy greens such as spinach, fortified cereals, and milk and yogurt. The sheet says Men older than 70 and teenage girls and boys are most likely to have low intakes of magnesium, and in the next sentence that once food and supplements are combined, total intakes are generally above the recommended amounts. The professional sheet puts a number on the food side: 48% of Americans get less magnesium from food and drinks than their estimated average requirement. It also says symptomatic deficiency from low intake is uncommon in otherwise healthy people, because the kidneys hold on to magnesium when intake runs low.

That is the context for two lines on the shop page. It says the NIH recommends 300 to 400 mg a day, while the fact sheet's table runs 310 to 420 mg, with men at the top. It also says 50% or more of the population is deficient, with a footnote pointing at the professional sheet. That sheet's figure is 48% eating less than an average requirement from food, a gap in intake rather than a count of people who are deficient. Use the fact sheet's numbers on the list, and let a father's actual plate decide how large the gap is.

Sleep is why the label says an hour before bed

The capsules are sold for winding down. A parent's sleeplessness still starts with the medicines that raise fall risk, and with whether anything should be swallowed at all; that order is in sleep aids for the elderly. If a clinician has already said a magnesium supplement is appropriate, the bedtime serving is the labeled three capsules unless they have named another number.

Buying it, once the list is settled

On 2 October 2026 the shop page listed one bottle at $39.99, or $33.99 on a subscription that ships every one, two, or three months at 15% off. Prices move, so confirm on the day. Buy a single bottle first, and switch to the subscription after the pharmacist has set the dose and the timing around any bone drug or antibiotic.

Frequently Asked Questions

PurelyMin magnesium: how many capsules is one serving? Three capsules, which the maker lists as 279 mg of elemental magnesium and 414 mg of L-theanine. Write that on the medicine list.

Is it okay to take four or five PurelyMin capsules? Four capsules come to about 372 mg of magnesium and five to about 465 mg, both above the 350 mg upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medications. The shop page suggests that range for older adults. The fact sheet's exception to the limit is a recommendation from a health care provider. Ask the pharmacist or clinician who can see the kidney results and the whole medicine list, and if they say yes, write their number and their name on the list.

Can PurelyMin be taken with Fosamax or another bisphosphonate? The professional fact sheet says to take magnesium-rich supplements at least 2 hours before or after an oral bisphosphonate. Ask the pharmacist to set both times on the same list, since bisphosphonates have their own morning rules.

Can a parent with kidney disease take PurelyMin? That question goes to the clinician who has the lab results. The fact sheet's line about clearing extra magnesium is about healthy kidneys.

What is the magnesium supplement upper limit for older adults? 350 mg a day for adults, from supplements and medications combined; the consumer table lists one adult figure. Magnesium in food does not count toward it. Laxatives and heartburn products that contain magnesium are medications, so they go on the same list.
